Dan Meir: case studies Part 1

Dan Meier is an engineer in British Columbia's mining sector. Dan has undertaken a major rebuild of his 40 year old home in the Township of Langley. The project has seen the finished square footage increase from 1720 ft2 to 3540 ft2, doubling the homes living space.

Q.
Dan, what first struck me about you on our first meeting is how attentive to detail you are and how focused you are on the task at hand. What was it that brought you to look into insulation options?

A.
We bought a home in East Langley with the intent of renovating and expanding it. One of our main objectives was to create an energy efficient, environmentally sound home and thus we sought out quality products to be used throughout the process. This extended not only to insulation but to all of our materials and mechanical equipment. What drew me to look carefully at insulation materials though is the direct relationship to operating costs and the soft cost of comfort. The old home had extremely poor insulation with no vapour barrier. You would have the thermostat on 21C and the house was very dafty and not comfortable – pretty obvious where our heating costs were going.

Q.
In our first discussion it became obvious that you had done your homework and had a reasonably good handle on your options for insulation materials, how they performed and what the advantages of each was. What was it that drew you toward Spray Foam Insulation in particular?

A.
I had seen the product used on Mike Holmes’ shows on HGTV and decided to learn more about the product. It wasn’t hard to understand the advantages of spray foam insulation versus the more traditional insulating materials and the value it brought to a home. I was looking for a material that was versatile and would do a number of things all at once. Ideally the material would be a very good thermal barrier, would seal the building envelope thus playing a large role in eliminating potential mold and mildew issues. Spray foam fit the bill and I quickly eliminated other options because of how superior spray foam performed in all of these areas.

Dan Meir: case studies Part 2

Most of the increase in finished foor space came from the unfinished basement. We all know how basements are all too often damp, dark and cold making them undesirable living space. Our basement is roughly 5ft below ground with 3ft day lighting. The 3 ft above ground gave the opportunity to position windows with the correct exposure for natural light but the 5ft of foundation wall was the challenge. In my opinion, there is only one way to insulate a foundation wall and that is with 2lb spray foam. You can surpass minimal code for insulation R value in a 2x4 wall allowing you to maximize finished foor space and it is also a vapour barrier. Using traditional insulation batts you can create moisture problems if a traditional poly vapour barrier is used behind the drywall.

I was also concerned about how to best insulate all the box ends at the ceiling of the basement. When you look at the traditional methods of placing cut insulation batts into the box end and then adding a poly vapour barrier with acoustical seal it is not hard to understand that there has to be a better way to do this! Spray foam is the answer.

Q.
What drew you to EcoLogic as your contractor of choice?

A.
I had gone for quotation to a number of insulation contractors and after determining that EcoLogic was price competitive I awarded the work to EcoLogic because I felt that they were the most flexible to deal with. I had come to learn that in a rebuild project things rarely proceed as planned. In the end, I was not disappointed with my choice.

Q.
Once the contract was awarded, what was your experience with EcoLogic Spray Foam Insulation? What were you most impressed with?

A.
I was really impressed with how fast the material could be applied, there was no schedule impact on my project. Your team was organized and kept things neat.

Q.
Were you able to realize any savings or effciencies as a result of using EcoLogic Spray Foam Insulation?

A.
It is too early to really comment on savings for heating costs but we can say that the house is no longer drafty and the basement is now a desirable living space. I'm confdent that once our project is fully completed we will experience lower running costs for heating and cooling.

Q.
Did EcoLogic work with the city and the inspector to ensure that the sign-off and inspection approvals went smoothly?

A.
Spray foam, while not new, has not been that prevalent in residential home construction and as a result the building department requested documentation at the time of my insulation inspection. EcoLogic quickly provided me with the necessary documentation to satisfy the inspector's requests.

Q.
You are now well into your first winter after having insulated with EcoLogic Spray Foam. What is your experience with the newly insulated home to date? How has it changed your home?

A.
The house is defnitely more comfortable than before but too early to comment on energy useage.

Q.
If you fnd yourself working on another project or renovating a home in the future do you plan to use EcoLogic again? Would you recommend us to a friend and neighbour?

A.
If I have a future need for an insulation contractor EcoLogic will defnitely be on my bidders list! You and your team worked hard on my project to ensure a quality application of the product and to ensure that I would have a good experience with spray foam - it worked!

case studies: LEDCOR Oliver Robson

Oliver Robson: case studies Part 1

Short description of project and about the client:

Oliver Robson is the Quality Control Engineer for the Fitzsimmons Creek Run of the River Hydro Project constructed by Ledcor CMI Ltd. In April of 2009, he contacted EcoLogic Spray Foam to address a technical problem they faced with the penstock leading to the power generation house.

Oliver, what specific problems did you face and how had you considered addressing them?

The final approach for the penstock into the power house was down a 138% grade slope with a 25m slope distance secured between 2 large concrete anchor blocks. Issues to address:

Backfilling on grades higher than 35% become very challenging, if not impossible. Do to continuously changing environmental conditions, if left exposed; the steel penstock would be subjected to expansion / contraction cycling. An expansion joint could have been used, however a more economical solution needed to be approached.

What led you to seek foam as a solution to this problem?

Ledcor regularly uses spray form in the building department and I thought it was the only reasonable way to insulate the pipe considering the faced conditions.

In our first discussion it became obvious that you had done your homework and had a reasonably good handle on your options for insulation materials, how they performed and what the advantages of each was. What was it that drew you towards Spray Foam Insulation in particular?

Initially we had discussed installing a larger corrugated steel pipe around our penstock and using pour foam to fill the void. It soon became apparent that this would be time consuming and difficult to insure the pipe was sufficiently insulated.

Oliver Robson: case studies Part 2

EcoLogic Spray Foam and Ledcor came to agreement that using a sprayed product and applying a protective layer afterwards would be more advantageous. Shotcrete; a reinforced sprayed concrete shell would be used to protect it from the elements, UV and small falling rock fragments.
In consultation with EcoLogic we came to see Spray foam as a viable option. It provided a cost savings, it was a faster application, and it met the criteria we had set for this solution.
What drew you to EcoLogic as your contractor of choice?

EcoLogic was actually not the first contractor we had chosen as another had come in at a lower price. It was only after the initial contractor showed up to install the material that we ran into trouble. Both contractors had been to site to asses the situation and were both aware of the with safety certification required to safely work on our site. The initial contractor subbed the work out; failing to explain the safety requirements and difficulties involved with applying the spray foam at our site. We quickly contacted EcoLogic to see if they could still complete the work in short notice.

What led us to come back to EcoLogic is the way in which they conduct themselves. They are very professional, listen carefully and ask questions to ensure that there are no misunderstandings. Their attention to detail and professionalism instilled confidence with their company’s ability to handle our project and special requirements.

Once the contract was awarded, what was your experience with EcoLogic Spray Foam Insulation?

Quick, professional, all safety requirements were above and beyond. All minimum thicknesses were reached on first application and all work was completed for the quote provided. Ledcor was more than satisfied with the service and expertise that Ecologic provided.

What were you most impressed with?

Ledcor was very impressed with the service Ecologic provided. Even though we initially chose another contractor, Ecologic bent over backwards to help us complete our insulation needs on time

Oliver Robson: case studies Part 3

and for the same quoted price!

Was there a particular moment or stage of progress that really stood out for you as the insulation was being installed?

How easy the installation was considering the very difficult location and environment.

Were you able to realize any savings or efficiencies as a result of using EcoLogic Spray Foam Insulation?

Done once, done right!

You are now well into your first winter after having insulated with EcoLogic Spray Foam. Is it performing as specified?

The concrete shell adhered perfectly to the foam and looks good after the first winter

When you find yourself working on another project do you plan to use EcoLogic again? Would you recommend us for commercial projects based on your experience?

EcoLogic, provided an exceptional service and will be considered for future projects.

Thanks so much for your time today Oliver. Are there any final comments that you would like to share that I have not touched base on?

Thank you for getting the work done right and getting Ledcor out of a difficult situation.
